Laptop Pool Policy
University Computing's Instructional Technology Lab provides laptop computers to faculty and staff for short-term business travel. This pool of computers is intended to meet the off-campus travel needs not otherwise met by the normal portable classroom presentation equipment.  This service replaces the laptops formerly housed in the University Computing main office.
  • Laptops may be reserved up to six months in advance on a first-come first-served basis.
  • Under no circumstances will a reservation be accepted for usage of a personal nature.
  • Reservations will be limited to a maximum of three weeks.
  • A reason for the laptop request must be noted on the reservation form.
  • Laptops will be configured with standard office software. No additional software will be added.
  • The laptop disk image will be "frozen", meaning that the laptop reconfigures itself to the original setup upon reboot. An area will be set aside on the local disk drive that will allow users to save local data that will not be overwritten upon reboot.
  • Replacement or repair costs related to lost or damaged items may be charged to the user’s department based on the specific circumstances of the incident.
  • Laptops may be picked up and returned to the ITL (Leyburn Library - Main Level) Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.

Helpful Tips:

Logging in-
Each time the laptop is turned on, you will be presented with the Novell login screen. When connected to the W&L network, you will use your normal Novell login and password. When using the laptop off the W&L network, you will check the "Workstation Only" box, type the word "user" in the Username field, and leave the password field blank (more details).

Saving documents to the local drive-
The laptop has a locked C:\ drive in order to protect the setup of the computer. The computer is referred to as "frozen".  This will assure you of getting a laptop where the programs and setup have not been modified by the previous user.  Each time the machine reboots, it resets itself to the "frozen" image.  An area that will not be overwritten has been set aside for you to save your documents.  This area is labeled as the "T:\ drive (Save Local Data Here)" (more details).  You may also use a USB memory stick as an alternate place to save your data (not provided).
