NMC Recognizes Washington and Lee in Worldwide Search for Excellence

Washington and Lee has been recognized as a world leader in its innovative approaches to the use of technology by NMC, The New Media Consortium.

Washington and Lee was among 50 colleges, universities, and museums worldwide admitted to NMC this year. Each was recognized for their demonstrated commitment to pushing the boundaries of teaching, learning, research, or creative expression, and adept in the application of technology. The 2003 honorees join 150 prestigious colleges, universities, and museums who have joined the NMC over the 10-year history of the organization. Selection to be part of this elite group is considered a mark of excellence, and higher education institutions of all types are included among those who have been so recognized.

The selection process is competitive and applications are ranked in a criteria-based system of peer review. Dr. Larry Johnson, president and CEO of the NMC, noted, "The selection process was very competitive-- we received the largest number of applications in our history, and the overall quality of those applications was just extraordinary. Taken as a whole, the results show the state of technology integration in colleges and universities is at a remarkably high
level."

"Even among a very strong field, it was quite clear that Washington and Lee is a place where smart, creative people are devising innovative solutions to challenges we all face in teaching and learning," Johnson continued, "The dedication to excellence here is palpable, and students and faculty are the clear beneficiaries. This recognition is well deserved."

John Blackburn, Head of Washington and Lee’s Instructional Technology Group, is gratified to be included among such prestigious company, but not surprised. “Many would not immediately associate W&L with cutting-edge technology, but there are extremely innovative projects going on here in a variety of disciplines. This is a great opportunity to make more people aware of the groundbreaking work being done here.”

NMC members include highly selective private universities like MIT, Princeton, Harvard, and Yale; leading state research universities like UCLA, Texas, and Michigan; outstanding liberal arts colleges like Mount Holyoke, Carleton, and the University of Richmond; and a growing list of innovative museums such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
